Book Review + Giveaway: Kill Me Softly

Mirabelle's past is shrouded in secrecy, from her parents' tragic deaths to her guardians' half-truths about why she can't return to her birthplace, Beau Rivage. Desperate to see the town, Mira runs away a week before her sixteenth birthday—and discovers a world she never could have imagined.

In Beau Rivage, nothing is what it seems—the strangely pale girl with a morbid interest in apples, the obnoxious playboy who's a beast to everyone he meets, and the chivalrous guy who has a thing for damsels in distress. Here, fairy tales come to life, curses are awakened, and ancient stories are played out again and again.

But fairy tales aren't pretty things, and they don't always end in happily ever after. Mira has a role to play, a fairy tale destiny to embrace or resist. As she struggles to take control of her fate, Mira is drawn into the lives of two brothers with fairy tale curses of their own . . . brothers who share a dark secret. And she'll find that love, just like fairy tales, can have sharp edges and hidden thorns.

My review:

Cute book, but didn’t turn out the way I’d hoped.

Before she turns sixteen, Mirabella (a.k.a. Mira) escapes her godmothers and flees to Beau Rivage, the town where her parents died. But the longer Mira stays in Beau Rivage, the more she realizes things aren’t what they seem, and the people are just as strange. When Mira befriends a few locals, she notices the marking she’s had on her back since childhood is also on others—all displaying different symbols, all with different meanings. Mira and the other people with the marks are destined to replay whatever fairy tale their mark displays for the rest of their lives.

But Mira thinks outside the box, and she’s determined to challenge destiny. Will she end up with Prince Charming, or will she sleep for a hundred years?

In the end, I was disappointed with Mira’s "Prince Charming" choice. This guy was easily the most annoying character in the book, in my opinion.

Also, why did nobody love Freddie? He was ADORABLE. I just wanted to hug him over and over again. Seriously: he could be my Prince Charming anytime. FREDDIE. <3333

I also appreciated the fact that the author created her own fairy-tale curse. I won’t go into much detail, because I want the reader to be surprised (and because it’s kept secret for half the book).

Overall, it was a great retelling of classic fairy-tale stories, but with a twist. So, if you love new takes on old tales, then you should grab this book. It’s almost as tempting as a magical spindle.

Almost.
